Hunter Lopez Memorial Foundation
Hunter Lopez was killed in action on August 26, 2021 while serving as a member of the United States Marine Corps in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. He was only 22 years old at the time of his passing, during his short life he dedicated his teenage years and adult life to service and took pride in being part of organizations with a rich tradition. Prior to joining the Marine Corps, Hunter was a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Explorer Scout from 2014-2017 for Post 507, where he obtained the rank of Captain.
Hunter served in the Marine Corps for four years; His first three years as part of the Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company A, 5th Platoon and most recently as a member of 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Golf Company, 1st Platoon.
Hunter’s plan included finishing out his fifth and final year in the marine corps and immediately joining the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department where his parents work as sheriff’s deputies. As you can see Hunter was dedicated to service and community and was an amazing son, person and patriot.
To honor Hunter and to carry on with his mission of helping others, The Hunter Lopez Memorial Foundation was started. In 2017 when Hunter completed “boot camp” we took notice of several young marines who during family day and graduation day did not have family supporting them. We discovered many of those marines had parents and family across the United States who could not afford to travel to the Marine Recruiting Depot in San Diego, CA. These young marines were starting off their adult lives serving our country and reaching a milestone in their lives without family present to share it with. With money that was raised for our family after Hunter’s passing we started the foundation and began to set about to change this. To date we have sponsored a family and enabled the parents of a young marine to share in this momentous time in his live. We were able to provide flight, hotel accommodations and ground transportation. Ground transportation was provided to another family as well.
Additionally we were able to sponsor two service dogs for active service members.
Plans are underway to sponsor another family for the upcoming USMC graduation in late January, 2022.
The foundation is young, but we will continue this mission and as additional needs are identified we will continue to do all we can to help those who serve and protect our country.
